What is a Sitz bath?
A sitz bath is a warm water bath used for healing or cleansing purposes. They are typically used for hemorrhoid relief, or for helping the healing process after having a baby, especially if Mom had to have an episotomy.
How does it work?
A sitz bath is literally a bath you sit in (which is why so many people call it a ‘sits bath’). Sitting in warm water allows more blood to reach the impacted area, promoting healing and helping with any discomfort. A sitz bath uses the theory of hydrotherapy or water therapy. Added to the water is a small amount of salt which helps to sterilize the affected area so reduce infection. I can tell you from personal experience, using them both when I had hemorrhoids and after childbirth, they are incredibly soothing.
What do you do?
Fill your sitz bath with warm water (warm enough to be almost uncomfortable, but not warm enough to burn).
Most doctors recommend sitting in the water for about 20-30 minutes several times a week to promote healing (when I had given birth I was told to do it at least once a day, so I don’t think you can do it too much if you find it soothing).
When you get out of your sitz bath, make sure you dry the area with a clean, cotton towel. You should pat, not rub dry. Some doctors also recommend letting the area air dry.
