At home hemorrhoid treatments

You may think that you are limited in what you can do by yourself to get rid of the symptoms of hemorroids, but in actual fact there's quite a lot!

  • Wipe yourself with clean wet toilet paper. Wetting the paper makes it softer.
  • take a Sitz Bath (click the link on the left hand side for more about these)
  • for mild cases use ice packs, topical ointments, suppositories, seat cushions, moist cloths and loose underwear.
  • Apply a cold compress directly onto the hemorrhoid. Ask a family member to help you if it's tricky for you to get there. It may help to lie facedown.
  • Clean the area well with warm water several times a day, but make sure you dry the area well afterwards (a hairdryer on the cool setting can help!)
  • Do not sit for too long as it will make your hemorrhoid worse
  • Buy a doughnut shaped cushion. They are available in pharmacies and medical supply stores and can be useful. Try and sit on it as instructed.
  • Apply ice packs on the affected area (children's icy poles are just the right shape and when wrapped in tissue paper make a perfect ice pack that you can slip inside your underwear).
  • Drink lots of water as it smoothens your stool passage.
  • Don't strain you bowel. This is one of the best curative and preventive measures for hemorrhoids
  • Eat food which helps to ease digestion and smooth stool passage. For example have more fluids, fruits and vegetables rather than bread, soda, etc.

There are also numerous creams, gels, suppositories, tablets and supplements that you can take at home to help relieve the symptoms and eradicate the hemorrhoids. Click the Herbal and Medicinal links on the left hand side to find out more. Most products can be ordered on the Internet so you don't need to make an embarrassing visit to your Dr or Pharmacist.
